Attacks on Progressives Attack Our Progress

“The silence from Republican leadership is deafening,” says national community organizing network

07.15.2019

WASHINGTON -- Over the weekend, President Donald Trump tweeted racist slurs attacking the “squad” of progressive women in the United States House of Representatives, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib. He continued the attacks Monday morning, insinuating that the representatives are anti-Israel and anti-American. In response, Jennifer Epps-Addison, network president and co-executive director of the Center for Popular Democracy released the following statement.

“Donald Trump is running on a racist agenda in 2020. He has built his political brand off of appeals to white supremacy and continues by attacking the freshman progressive women of color in Congress. This is a distraction from building a progressive future, but is also much more dangerous and much deeper. The hatred that the freshmen members receive on account of their race and gender threatens their lives and their ability to serve their roles in the United States House of Representatives. Such vitriol from the President of the United States also threatens the future and livelihoods of people of color in this country with the insinuation that we do not belong here. The silence from Republican leadership is deafening.”
