Director of Workforce Innovation

Position Location: Work in our Brooklyn, NY or Washington, DC office, or remotely from other locations.

The Center for Popular Democracy (CPD) is seeking a Director of Workforce Innovation to advance initiatives that promote quality employment and mobility for the front-line hourly workforce with a focus on the service sector.  Quality employment includes adequate wages, access to sick and family leave, stable and predictable work hours, equitable opportunities to advance, and meaningful opportunities for employee voice in shaping working conditions.  Our ideal candidate brings experience engaging corporate actors towards greater civic leadership and a commitment to advancing the job standards and voice of low-wage workers.

The Director of Workforce Innovation will:

  • Recruit employers to engage in high road business models that provide quality employment by:
    • establishing training partnerships;
    • communications efforts;
    • engaging with employers and vendors in leading US industries on workforce management trends, best practices and innovation;
    • promoting employer engagement in advocacy efforts to strengthen labor standards and raise industry standards for quality employment.
  • Establish and manage innovative research partnerships to:
    • build the business, social and economic case for more sustainable workforce management practices;
    • deepen our understanding of the workforce strategies that promote employee mobility and stability.
  • Develop an innovative model of workforce management that:
    • utilizes transparent equity metrics, technology and employee engagement;
    • promotes career pathways in the service sector by strengthening the skills of low-wage hourly workers.
  • Identify private and public funding sources, write and submit proposals, coordinate fundraising strategies with CPD partners, prepare and submit reports to funders.

CPD works to build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda.

The Coordinator will be housed within the Fair Workweek Initiative (FWI), working with CPD community partner organizations. The Fair Workweek Initiative, anchored by the Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action, is driving the growing momentum to restore a fair workweek through policy solutions and industry change.

Job Qualifications

  • A commitment to social, gender, and racial justice issues and understanding of challenges facing low-wage hourly workers;
  • Five years’ experience in corporate social responsibility, social entrepreneurship, employer-oriented research collaborations, or workforce development; or two years in a senior-level external-facing position in one or more of these fields;
  • A proven track record in planning, implementing, and managing multiple projects;
  • Experience developing and maintaining strong working relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders;
  • Strong writing skills;
  • Highly analytical, detail-oriented, outcome-driven and organized;
  • Experience leading projects with technology components is preferred.
