NEW YORK CITY - In response to the release of a memorandum on “Guidelines for the Enforcement of Civil Immigration Law” by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas, Ana Maria Archila, co-executive director of the Center for Popular Democracy, issued the following statement:

“On Thursday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas released a memorandum establishing priorities for immigration enforcement. Let us be clear: there is no moral way to determine who a system rooted in white supremacy and anti-Blackness should target for the dehumanizing treatment of being caged and banished.

The repeated violence perpetrated by CBP and ICE prove time and time again that these agencies cannot be reformed and must be abolished. Our immigration system must stop treating our communities as threats that need targeting; instead, it should be transformed into one that allows our communities to thrive.”
