About the Position:

We are seeking a Finance Director based in our New York City office. We are looking for individuals who can provide exceptional leadership in overseeing the financial operations of a growing organization. Position requires an individual who can maintain a culture of compliance, ethics and integrity. Experience in finance/accounting with extensive knowledge of non-profit professional accounting principles, concepts, and techniques. Strong technical, verbal and written communications skills are required.

Primary Responsibilities:

The staff member will report to the Director of Operations & Finance and will:

  • Design, implement, monitor and maintain procedures and controls to ensure the integrity of financial reporting and sound financial practices.
  • Prepare monthly organizational budget reports and other financial reports for the Development and Budget teams of the organization
  • Work with the Development department to develop program budgets and financial reports for funders.
  • Be responsible for the preparation, recording and publication of the Organization’s financial statements in accordance to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the related disclosures.
  • Coordinate audit activities with external auditors to ensure efficiency of audit.
  • Support the preparation of governmental filings such as 990
  • Oversee preparation of quarterly reports and supplemental schedules for use both internal and external to the organization
  • Work with the Director of Operations and Finance to select and implement systems and software relevant to the needs of the organization
  • Develop finance/accounting department staff by providing training, guidance and support.
  • Maintain professional certifications through continued professional education (CPE).
  • Maintain knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Statutory Accounting Principles, and keeps abreast of changes that are inherent in accounting regulations for reporting and compliance with rules and regulations. This includes (but not limited to) Public Accounting Oversight Board Auditing Guidelines, Financial Standards Accounting Board Guidelines, American Institute of CPA’s Guidelines, State Accountancy Board Rules and Regulations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field. Master’s degree in accounting, management or related field.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible finance/accounting experience.
  • Previous management or supervisory experience required.
  • Extensive knowledge and application of professional accounting principles, concepts and techniques, preferably in a non-profit environment
  • Previous experience and demonstrated ability to perform high-level computer skills including Microsoft Office suite software and ERP systems.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with ability to manage in an environment of change, with very diverse perspectives and needs.
  • Ability to interact well with all levels of staff and Board members, comfortable doing so remotely
  • Ability to travel
